Seabin, an innovative, ecological collector of floating waste, is arriving on the market!

This exclusive partnership demonstrates Poralu Marine’s development towards the provision of new solutions to environmental challenges.

Poralu Marine and Seabin Pty Ltd , known by the name of The Seabin Project, announce the initial placing on the market of Seabins, innovative, ecological collectors of floating plastic waste, which are intended for harbour areas and private marinas. From 6 November, 500 Seabins are available on pre-sale via the website www.seabinproject.com and the Poralu Marine distribution network.

Peter Ceglinski and Andrew Turton, two Australian surfers, developed this collector which traps all types of floating waste. Their idea “started a craze”, but to bring it to fruition a worldwide exclusivity agreement was concluded between The Seabin Project and the French company, Poralu Marine, in 2016. This partnership between the two companies concerns the development, manufacture and worldwide distribution of the Seabin. It entrusted the entire industrial and commercial dimension of the project to Poralu Marine.

Poralu Marine, the world leader in aluminium harbour facilities, is producing the Seabins in its factory in Port, Ain (France) after having concluded the various research and development phases linked to the creation of this truly innovative product”, explained Laurent Gasiglia, Managing Director of Poralu Marine. This choice demonstrates a fundamental development for the Poralu Marine group, which is more and more positioned on the provision of new solutions to environmental challenges. “

Poralu Marine is presenting the first commercial version at Metstrade Amsterdam, 14-16 November 2017 – Poralu Marine Stand: 05.506

The first marketable Seabins will be presented at the next Metstrade (Marine Equipment Trade Show), from 14 to 16 November 2017 in Amsterdam.

Furthermore the Seabin V5 Floating Dock has been nominated to compete in the Design Award 2017 in the “Marina equipment, boatyard equipment and boat construction tools and materials” category: www.metstrade.com/innovation/dame-nominees/.

How does the Seabin work?

The Seabin, fixed on a pontoon, is submerged and connected to an electric pump which creates a continuous current to attract floating waste to the collector. The waste is recovered in a bag. Once it is full the waste bag is emptied by maintenance personnel, and then replaced in the Seabin.

The first Seabin collectors are intended to be fixed on floating pontoons. 2018 will see the development of a version for a fixed quay. Eventually, one of the aims is also to produce collectors using the plastic recovered by the Seabins themselves. “In our company we use plastic articles to trap plastic, commented Peter Ceglinski, Manager of Seabin. The Seabins are 100% recyclable and we are currently studying the quantity of recycled materials that can be incorporated into Seabin production. “

Plastic pollution… an environmental challenge

Data varies depending on continents and the studies conducted, but the figures stated always remain astronomical. According to the estimates, 300,000 million tons of plastic are discarded every year in aquatic environments and more than 5 thousand billion particles of all sizes float in our oceans. It would take between 1 century and 1 millennium for these components to break down. Today there are 1 million marine animals and 200,000 mammals which die every year due to plastic pollution. The microscopic compounds which come from their breakdown are ingested by the marine fauna that arrive on our plates, and so on.
